Chennai is a multifaceted city, always adopting new ideas and coming up with fruitful opportunities. It has now taken yet another step towards a smarter future. The Greater Chennai Corporation has started working towards building a Smart Transport System that is set to change the way people commute in Chennai. With an aim to install a smart traffic system which would run on GPS-enabled buses and intelligent traffic management and information systems.

After receiving Rs.660 crore funding from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), preliminary work has begun to make Chennai’s transport smarter and more efficient. This updated transportation project involves the development of intelligent apps that provide information about city-wide public transport, number plate reading, advanced monitoring cameras, and priority signals for buses.

When completed, it will enable one to find the fastest route and mode of transport to reach a particular part of the city. It will be able to give you real time information about when the bus will arrive at a specific stop, so that you can plan your commute accordingly. The project is estimated to cover areas from Saidapet to Egmore, which includes covering 471 bus routes and major city corridors like Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Outer Ring Road, and East Coast Road. Another phase of this system upgrade involves the development of flyovers and other infrastructural changes.

Over the years, Chennai has undergone significant changes, which have largely contributed to its rapid urbanization. A boom in the IT, automobile and healthcare sectors have led to an increase in employment and educational opportunities. People are choosing to settle down and buy property in Chennai, given the infrastructural upgrades and real estate possibilities. With this paradigm shift, the city has also become prone to traffic congestion. The intelligent traffic control system is expected to ease and regulate everyday traffic, especially for private vehicle users, public transportation and pedestrians. Chennai is speeding towards a smarter future and the groundwork has already been laid.
