Owning a beautiful home is a dream that every single one of us might have. Buying a home is generally one of the biggest purchases that someone might make. Whether the home is small, or large, or in the middle of a city, or in a far off suburb, it is still a very huge buy.
The process of buying a home is one that involves a lot of financial planning. Whether you are buying a home outright, or planning to take a loan from a bank, it is a pretty long process.
Unfortunately, realising this dream is tougher on some of us than others. Thankfully, this does not go unnoticed by the government.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a government scheme that looks to support those who cannot purchase a home themselves. It is a centrally sponsored welfare scheme that seeks to improve the quality of life of the urban and rural people who might struggle financially. The PMAY scheme seeks to build environment friendly housing projects that are affordable to the urban and rural people with financial struggles.

It is therefore split into 2 categories:

  • The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin
This section of the PMAY scheme is geared towards helping the rural poor, and seeks to help them secure decent housing.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban
The urban section of the PMAY hopes to rehabilitate slum dwellers, covering whole areas, and making sure that the deserving populace obtains housing.

The PMAY is not open to all, as it offers welfare support to people in most need of it. The PMAY scheme is reserved for those who belong to marginalised classes, such as:

  • Scheduled castes
  • Scheduled tribes
  • Low income group populations
  • Economically weaker sections
  • Medium income groups 1 and 2

Since there is a certain level of exclusivity to the scheme, the PMAY scheme does require a large set of documents that supplement the fact that you deserve to benefit from it. The documents you require to opt into the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin are as follows:
